Fireworks testing at EPCOT

To contact us Click HERE
The forums at wdwMagic.com have a thread discussing the recent fireworks testing during the night at EPCOT.  Some people think this might mean a change to Illuminations is coming, but others think Disney is just testing for other reasons.  Illuminations is getting a little "long in the tooth" so a change might be a good thing, or not.  I often wondered when they tested fireworks.  Maybe it's odd that we don't hear more about it.

Online Video's Massive Growth -- You Want Data Points? I Got 'Em!

    To contact us Click HERE
Online video -- finally -- truly is multi-screen.  Anytime.  Anywhere.  On demand.

Here are some undeniable powerful stats that demonstrate how fast and massively online video growth is happening right now:

-- the number of U.S. households that watch online video on TV sets is now up to 32.1 million -- nearly 50% more than same time last year (when that number was 24.8 million) (SOURCE: Forrester)
-- by 2016, over-the-top (OTT) and streamed video services will be worth $11 billion and will overtake spending for current cable TV subscriptions (SOURCE: PwC)

-- the number of online video consumers worldwide will double by 2016, growing from 792 million last year to 1.5 billion users (SOURCE: Cisco)

-- for the first time ever, long-form video (i.e., over 10 minutes in length) represents the majority of all online videos viewed, meaning that consumers are now certainly very comfortable watching full-length movies, TV shows and sports online (SOURCE: Ooyala)

Is that enough for you?  Want more?
We got 'em all at (CAUTION BLATANT PLUG ALERT) Sorenson Media.  We are right in the thick of it all -- since every single video you see online must be transformed/optimized for delivery to your relevant screen.  And, due to this massive growth in online video (which is still in its very early innings), we are increasingly seeing these video workflows (in which this transformation occurs) moving to the Cloud.  We have led that charge, and we intend to continue to be leaders in providing leading Cloud-based video workflow/transcoding solutions.

Ooyala's New $35 Million Round Underscores Accelerating International Demand for Video Enabling Solutions

    To contact us Click HERE
Ooyala is one of the leading online video platforms (OVPs).  We here at Sorenson Media know them well.  We respect them.  And, we congratulate them in raising an additional $35 million in funding, which brings Ooyala's total financing to date to an incredible $80 million.

That massive sum rivals the total financing "take" of $100 million by OVP grand-daddy Brightcove (which successfully went public earlier this year and still trades at about a 7X multiple of its trailing 2011 revenues).

Ooyala's latest development -- together with Brightcove's recent IPO -- underscores the critical foundational and increasingly strategic role played by video enabling technology, given the massive growth of online video and an increasingly complex multi-screen video delivery world.  After all, Australian telco giant Telstra led the latest financing for Ooyala (and now enjoys a seat on its board).

As I recently wrote, we too at Sorenson Media have operate our own OVP known as "Sorenson 360." And, it is unlike any other, precisely because it has uniquely expanded capabilities -- primarily its seamless integration with our award-winning video transcoding solutions (Sorenson Squeeze, Squeeze Server -- both in the Cloud and on premise -- as well as hybrid implementations).  Our Sorenson Media "quality" story also is an important differentiator.

My Summer Beach House -- We Are GIVERS

    To contact us Click HERE

We're having an amazing summer in San Diego so far -- blazing sun, beautiful weather.  Two years ago, not so much -- we were summer-less.  180 degree difference.
I've taken advantage of it with "Beach House" -- and we are "Givers."  Two great bands -- "Beach House" and "GIVERS" -- and two great soundtracks for the summer.
First up -- the band Beach House and its mesmerizing new album "Bloom."  This is great music to chill out by at your, well, beach house (if you are lucky enough to have one or have a friend who has one) (as they say, you never know how many friends you have until you own a beach house -- I saw this stitched into a pillow at a friend's beach house in Del Mar and wasn't sure if they pulled it out for my benefit).  Stand-out tracks from "Bloom" include "Myth," "New Year," and "Lazuli."  As I pointed out in a previous post, you will find yourself pressing repeat ... over ... and over ... and over again.
For something completely different -- and true upbeat beach summer-time music -- check out the brilliant young band GIVERS and their equally brilliant album "In Light."  There is not a mediocre song in the bunch.  Stand-out tracks include, well all of them -- but if I need to choose only 3, check out "Up Up Up" (the album's first single), "Ceiling of Plankton" (second single), and "Atlantic."  I discovered this band at this year's Jazz Fest in New Orleans -- trust me, they are the real deal.
The perfect soundtracks for your upcoming 4th of July holiday.
Is this a digital media post?  Depending on your definition.  Both albums can be streamed on Rhapsody and other streaming services.  And, in any event, my blog's tagline prominently includes my passion for music.  So there it is ....Peter Csathy's Digital Media Update

The Power of Great Customer Support

    To contact us Click HERE
Great customer support -- such a simple concept -- yet so few get it right.
Apple is one of those that do -- at least at the retail level.  Today's TechCrunch features a great analysis that shows how Apple commits to hiring in-store specialists at certain constant proportions as compared with its retail traffic.  And, the halo effects of doing so are noteworthy as well, as these specialists have millions of direct customer "touches" each and every day to spread the Apple gospel even further.
Customer support is one of those critical things that we take very seriously at Sorenson Media.  Each and every Sorenson Media customer has direct access to our crack Support team via phone, email, live chat, and forums.  And, trust me, our Support team is comprised of specialists who know our products inside and out -- with a deep understanding of our technology.
A focus on Support is one reason that our company's products have the legacy of trust that we have had for years.
We don't always get it right.  But, we certainly try ...Peter Csathy's Digital Media Update

Muse Channels Queen to Create "We Are The Champions" Part 2

    To contact us Click HERE
Muse's new song "Survival" was just released -- and has been selected as the official song of the 2012 London Olympics.

Verdict?  Muse scores big, as they channel Queen to create "We Are the Champions" Part 2!

Very British and very bombastic -- just like the original Freddy Mercury number -- and equally operatic.  And, just like the original, certainly not subtle nor shy.  Key lyrics are "Race.  Life is a race.  And I'm gonna win!"

    Arrogant?  You bet.  Over-the-top?  Absolutely.

But, every single Olympic athlete -- heck, every single high school athlete on the bus ride to the big game -- will crank this song to "11" both before the big race or game (and after, assuming they do, in fact, win).  (I remember doing that with "We Are the Champions" back in the day" in high school.)

I had my own little race this morning.  I cranked "Survival" 7X back-to-back-to-back on my morning run.

    And I felt like a champion ...

Bravo Muse.  Bravo for bringing bombast back to rock and roll ....Peter Csathy's Digital Media Update

    10 Keys To Entrepreneurial Success

    To contact us Click HERE

[Earlier today, Ooyala's CEO Jay Fulcher wrote a compelling guest post in TechCrunch about keys to building a successful company from the ground up.  It is worth reading.  Jay got me thinking back on my views on the subject -- and, voila, here they are.  Here is one of my posts from a couple years back.]
I frequently am asked by entrepreneurs what I believe are the most critical ingredients for success.  I recently wrote about past success (experience) being a predictor for success.  But, how does that help the first-time entrepreneur?  Here is my "Top 10" list that applies equally to first-time and long-time entrepreneurs and early stage companies:
    (1) obviously, a strong idea.
    (2) the right place at the right time (read the book "Outliers" in this regard).
    (3) a talented and committed team.
    (4) passion, dedication, and tenacity ("never say die") -- I am very old school this way, because I have seen this work time and time again; never underestimate the power of passion and tenacity.
    (5) focus, focus, focus!  (don't try to do too much -- otherwise you will fail; pick one thing and be the best).
    (6) adopt a partnership strategy and partner wisely (to accelerate growth by leveraging the strength of your partners).
    (7) be extremely disciplined and conservative in your spending (the era of spending your way to profitability is, correctly, long past).
    (8) be fearless and don't be afraid to fail -- but, if you do, "fail quickly", learn from that failure, and correct your course (an essential part of being an entrepreneur is the freedom to experiment and move nimbly, more quickly -- embrace that freedom, so long as it is consistent with #5 above).
    (9) be transparent with your team; share information; communicate frequently; be a cheerleader and pump them up; have fun!  (the life of an entrepreneur -- yes, it is frequently stressful and is not for the faint of heart; but, think of the freedom and the impact you and each of your team members have on a daily basis?).  You are frequently the underdog -- but being the underdog is a lot more fun; and underdogs can -- and do -- frequently win.
    (10) measure EVERYTHING!  Detailed metrics and analytics are absolute necessities, they are not luxuries; if you can't measure it, you can't fix it.  You should know everything about your users, and you should be able to measure sales and other success metrics on a live basis.
I learned these basic lessons over several years and after leading several companies -- and after having made several mistakes -- and after experiencing what has worked time and time again.Peter Csathy's Digital Media Update

Had to give the Burger King BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich a try so I ordered one up for lunch at the office.  The sandwich was surprisingly small.  When I opened up the bun, I was shocked to find a mayonnaise type dressing all over the bun and meat.  This absolutely ruined the sandwich for me.  I cannot recall ever eating a Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich loaded with mayo.  I liked the BBQ sauce, pulled pork and meat but the white sauce made me sick.  I took three bites and tossed it.  Some of the pork was shredded and easy to eat.  There was one piece that was like a rock.  Liked the onion crunch and would have liked a few pickles rather than the white stuff.

ROY'S HAWAII KAI 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION HAWAII KAI, HAWAII
Roy's Hawaii Kai puts on a really good 4th of July party from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. The restaurant sits right in front of the ocean and Moanalua Bay.  There is no better place to be to eat, drink and enjoy the fireworks.  The restaurant is closed on the 4th.  Tickets for this special event are sold in advance and always sell out about a week before the 4th.  Adults $60 / Children $30.   Roy's transforms the front of the restaurant into an outdoor bbq with tables and tents loaded with different food items.  The interior of the restaurant and bar are all open so you can walk inside and sit at the tables throughout the evening.  There is loads of food upstairs on the bar fronting the cooking station.  Same food as served outside on the lawn and patio.  One great thing about Roy's on the 4th is that they do not oversell the place.  There is plenty of room for large and small parties and you never feel crowded or have to wait in long lines for food.  You can stroll in and out of the restaurant without crowds of people all around.  This year the young staff walked around the party with large trays of food serving you right at your table.  There are waiters to take your beverage order.  You can order from the full bar and wine menu.  Admission does not include alcohol.  We always run a tab and pay after the fireworks are done.  While it seemed that there was less variety of food this year, the quality is always top notch.  Don't know if I saw everything that was available but I know we did our best to sample most of the dishes.  This is a great event and the only place I want to be on the 4th of July in Hawaii.   My hats off to the staff at Roy's for being very friendly and making this a great event.
